#6 - Thankful prayer
Daily Word - Feb. 11, 2019
1 Chronicles 16:34
34 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Colossians 4:2
2 Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving
There are several scriptures in the Bible that tell us to “give thanks” and to “be thankful”. I was raised to be thankful. You say “thank you” when someone does something or gives something to you. It is two small words that mean a lot when functioning with people. When someone appreciates what you have done for them you are more apt to do it again than you would be if they are unthankful.
God seems to be in agreement on that. He likes a thankful heart.
When Jesus healed the lepers there were ten of them. Only one returned to give him thanks for his healing. Luke 17:11-20 NET 11 Now on the way to Jerusalem, Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was entering a village, ten men with leprosy met him. They stood at a distance, 13 raised their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14 When he saw them he said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went along, they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16 He fell with his face to the ground at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. (Now he was a Samaritan.) 17 Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Was no one found to turn back and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to the man, “Get up and go your way. Your faith has made you well.
I find it very fruitful to make time for prayer made of nothing but thanks to the Lord. Try it sometime. Just go before Him in prayer but don’t ask for anything, just thank him for who he is and all he has done. You talk about favor, yes you will find favor. He loves it when his children show affection to him just like we love it when our children sow us affection. There is nothing like having your son put his arms around you and say “I love you”. It does a person good to hear that. It’s the same with God. Give him some special time. Tell him that you have come before Him not because you want anything, but because you love him.
Pray a prayer of thankfulness.
