"But I have a few things against you: You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel so that they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality." Rev. 2:14
Balaam was a prophet from the land of Midian. Balak was the king of Moab who solicited his help in dealing with the children of Israel. Num. 24:2-25.
It is assumed by some, wrongfully so, that Balaam was a false prophet. That would be incorrect. He was not a false prophet, if anything, he was a legitimate prophet. His error was that he was willing to prostitute his gifting for gain. I've seen this same error in the modern church, prophets who are willing to prostitute thier gifting for personel reasons and speak what the Lord has not spoken. This prostitution usually follows one of three veins.
(1) They will prophecy out of self interest. The prophet will prophecy about something to which they have a vested interest in an out come. There are always exceptions to this rule.
But it can be aslippery slope for a gifted individual to venture into.
(2) They will prophecy out of a "perceived" interest of another, usually a person in authority. While this on the surface may seem amiable. It can be a pitfall for a prophetically gifted individual. Understand I do not reference these as "false" prophets, but rather as a prostitution of said gifting. Understand you have to have a legitimate gifting before it can be prostituted. Think on that one.
(3) They will prophecy out of a perceived interest of the church. You think to yourself, isn't that what your supposed to do. No. You are to be faithful to Him only. Irregardless of a perceived perception of a direction the church should be taking. You prophecy for Him and Him alone, remember Balaam's error, (which ultimately cost him his life.) Num. 31:8.
Rule of thumb, speak what He gives you, don't try to dress it up so much. Be faithful to Him and what He tells you to say and don't get involved in self promotion. And avoid the error of Balaam.
