"But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word." Acts 6:4 KJV
First of all I have to admire the decision of the apostles not to neglect the ministry they were called to for a lesser ministry. The Churches growing feeding program was important, but not equally important. They made a decision to give themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. They had their priorities right. The Church was booming and experiencing growing pains. It's easy to get caught up in a good thing. So the apostles had
to make a decision between what was "good" and what was "best". They chose what was best.
There are three concepts to look at in this passage. First look at the word "continually". This is a power statement identifying the first century Church. They gave themselves continually
to prayer. Prayer allowed God's blueprint to be revealed to them. They didn't just give themselves to prayer. They gave themselves Continually to prayer. And they gave themselves to the ministry of the word. I think your short changing this concept by just
associating it with modern day bible study. It's more in association with "speaking the word of the Lord".
The spoken word was part of the life source of the first century church and it's still the life source today.
