Ishshah

- Oct. 3, 2023 - Pastor Rusty

“18Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." 19Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought [them] to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.20The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. 21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

23The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man."

24For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25And the man and his wife were both nakedand were not ashamed. Gen 2:18-25

The word “woman” translated in verses 22 and 23 is the same Hebrew word translated “wife” in verses 24 and 25. So why the discrepancy?🤔 Only the translators know.🧐 And we’re not allowed to ask them. I suppose they translated it differently simply because of context. The Hebrew word is “Ishshah”, this word more oft than naught is translated wife. The Hebrew word for man is the word “adam”. Every time you see the word man in the text above is translated from the word “adam”, except one. In verse 23 when when Adam says, “She shall be called Woman (ishshah), because she was taken from man!” He uses the word “ish” for the word man. It properly should read, “She shall be called “wife” because she came from her “husband”. These words are relational not generic. And they speak of a greater identity than just “man and woman.” A wife is woman with position. This is God’s answer to his own quandary, “It is not good for Adam to be alone.”God was presenting a wife to Adam not just a woman. After the long examination of all that God had created, He stepped back and made Adam a wife. In my church there are many women, but only one is my WIFE! She has identity that no one else can have. She is my true “help meet”. And I am in COVENANT with her, a covenant that has its origin in heaven. Becoming husband and wife is a life altering, paradigm shifting, covenant, that was originally designed by God. It was God’s answer to Adam’s loneliness. “And they Twain shall be one flesh.”Take greater care over this covenant for it is truly like no other. It can lead to paradise or it can lead to hell.

“Father make us one in purpose, cause your eternal unity to be upon this covenant. Help us to be joined unto our wife (or husband) as you intended. In Jesus name. Amen!” Pastor Rusty
