I have written on spiritual gifts over the past few blogs. My goal was to bring more understanding and even encourage you to seek after spiritual gifts.
Maybe you already function in one or more of those gifts. Personally I believe there is always room for improvement. If you do function in one or more already, ask God to stretch you and use you more then he has in the past. “Stretch me Lord, teach me how to do more than ever!”
If you do not have a spiritual gift ask the Father for one. You can be specific as to which one you would like to be used in. Remember being successful in a gift will cost you. Be will have to be teachable and listen to instruction. Ask someone you know who functions in a gift that you’re interested in, to mentor you. Keep a humble spirit and listen when you are given instruction. 1 Peter 5:5 ESV “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Never have an unteachable spirit. If you do, you will be useless to the Kingdom. We always have more to learn from the Father. “Those who disregard discipline despise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding.” Proverbs 15:32
You will make mistakes but don’t let that cause you to stop. Use what you learnt from your mistake and do better. You will have times of feeling defeat. Shake it off and move forward. If Satan can stop you he will. If you have a mentor their experience will be priceless for your journey.
I want to share my experience about asking God for a spiritual gift. It was right after we first experienced renewal. The Lord had laid it on my heart to open a Christian School. We did, and yes it is still going strong. We had so many young people experiencing God in a strong life changing way that they wanted a place to study without the worldly association. It was totally God and it was a wonderful experience. It was in this time that I specifically asked God for the gift of prophesy. I had the gift of tongues and I wanted to experience the prophetic gift. I asked the Lord for it as I lay on the floor of our church during Saturday night prayer meeting. As we began to circle up for prayer at the front of the church, it hit me. Just like that I heard words that were from the Lord. I gave them just as I heard them. They were words of instruction that brought about somethings our church and youth were needing. Note here: if you are seeking the gift of prophesy, it is vital that you relay them exactly like the Lord gave them to you. Do not add to the words of the Lord, and do not take away. Give them the way He gave them. Study books by those you know that function in the gifts. Become a student of the heavenly realm. Learn from those in your circle who function in the gifts you desire.
If you seek God with a whole heart you will be successful. If your flesh gets in the way you will need to crucify it.
