“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Rom. 8:13 NKJV
This possibly as accurate a translation of Romans 8:13 that you can hope for. The KJV says, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” That word “mortify” is from the Greek word “thanatoo” which means to kill. The Amplified Bible renders this passage, “for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever.”
The key to all of this is “if you through the Spirit”. This is not an external operation, it is an internal one. The Holy Spirit does the refining. This is not to be done through human effort or from human observation. This is truly an inward working of the HolySpirit. It is one of the key operations of the Spirit Life. In the Old Testament when someone offered an animal for a Sin offering unto the Lord, he was to bring his offering to the door of the tabernacle or temple. The priest would examine the animal to see if it was worthy. The participant was to proclaim over the animal the sins he desired to be removed and then the animal was slain before the Lord. It’s🩸was carried to the altar of burnt offering, 🔥(in Spanish you say “altar de holocausto”), the blood was liberally sprinkled there. Then the priest would flay the offering and remove the hide.🤔 The hide was not part of the burnt offering, which was to be a sweet smelling savor unto God.🧐 Our High Priest Christ Jesus bears a knife as well. He exposes the inner-man and removes his covering (the flesh). There are parts of fallen nature that are not part of presenting yourself a living sacrifice unto God. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Rom. 12:1. I know this philosophy is no longer taught amongst the “one and done” Christianity… but I promise you if you will receive the Holy Spirit and allow Him to work in you… you will come to appreciate this action. Amen! Pastor Rusty
