ā€œThis I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.ā€

— Galatians 5:16 (KJV)

To walk in the Spirit means more than believing—it means moving, living, and choosing under the Spirit’s direction every day. The Greek word for walk here is peripateō (περιπατέω), which means to walk around, to conduct one’s life, to order one’s steps. Paul is saying, ā€œLet the Spirit set the rhythm of your life.ā€ In the rhythm of the Lord we will walk in time every time. No missed steps, no regrets.

The word Spirit is Pneuma (πνεῦμα), meaning breath, wind, or life-force. Just as our bodies cannot live without breath, our spiritual lives cannot thrive without continual dependence on the Holy Spirit. Walking in the Spirit is living by His breath instead of our own effort. When we walk by our own efforts we find ourself in problems we then have to ask the Lord to get us out of.

Then Paul contrasts this with flesh, from the Greek sarx (σάρξ), meaning human nature apart from God, the fallen self. The flesh always pulls backward—to old habits, old wounds, old fears, and old sins. It is tied to what we were. But the Spirit pulls forward—toward who we are becoming in Christ. There is an old story about to dogs that were fighting. One representing the flesh man and the other representing the new man reborn into salvation. A man asked the owner which dog wins. The owner replies ā€œthe one I feed and say sic’ em toā€. We want to be feeding the right man. They say you are what you eat and in the spirit realm this is also true. We must feed the spirit man. You can not stay in a place you are not being fed and growing in God. You will eventually go weak and die spiritually.

In Hebrew walking often describes one’s daily conduct. The Hebrew verb halak (×”Öøלַךְ) means to walk, to go, to live. It paints a picture of a journey. Walking in the Spirit is not a moment; it is a direction. Flesh looks back to Egypt. Spirit leads toward the Promised Land.

Notice the promise in the verse: ā€œye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.ā€ This is not achieved by fighting the flesh directly, but by yielding to the Spirit. Light drives out darkness not by arguing with it, but by shining. When the Spirit governs your steps, the flesh loses its authority. In deliverance the demon spirits always say they are not coming out. They will say no up until the time that ā€œBam!!!ā€ The Holy Ghost evicts them right out! They knew from the very first time they were addressed in the name of Jesus that they were defeated!

Flesh leads backward. The Spirit leads forward.

Flesh reminds you of what you were.

Spirit reveals who you are in Christ.

Flesh pulls you into fear and self-rule.

Spirit leads you into freedom and God-rule.

Walking in the Spirit means asking daily:

Holy Spirit, order my steps. Set my pace. Choose my direction.

It means trusting His leading over your feelings, His truth over your memories, and His voice over your impulses.

You don’t conquer the flesh by willpower—you outgrow it by walking with God.
