“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)
There is a spiritual principle woven through Scripture that is impossible to ignore: whatever fills you, controls you. Paul uses a clear contrast—wine versus the Spirit. Wine alters thinking, loosens restraint, and leads to “excess” (Greek: asōtia, meaning reckless abandon, wastefulness, ruin). But being filled with the Holy Spirit produces the opposite—clarity, holiness, fruitfulness, and power.
The issue here isn’t merely alcohol. It is what we allow to dominate our hearts, influence our decisions, and shape our desires.
Every believer is a vessel. And a vessel cannot be filled with two things at once.
1. Being Filled Leaves No Room for Anything Else. There is no room for Influences that take you away from God. Fill yourself daily!
When the Holy Spirit fills us, He fills every room of the heart—our thoughts, emotions, choices, and motives.
A Spirit-filled life pushes out fear, anxiety, sin, temptation, despair, and every worldly influence that tries to sneak in.
Just as a cup brimming with water cannot hold sand,
a heart overflowing with the Spirit has no space for darkness.
This is why Paul says “Be filled”—the Greek verb (plēroō) describes an ongoing, continual filling.
Not a one-time moment, but a daily saturation of the soul.
2. What the Spirit Fills, He Transforms
When the Holy Spirit fills you:
Your mind is renewed
Your desires are purified
Your speech is seasoned with grace
Your steps are ordered by the Lord
Your reactions are governed by His peace
You will be able to hear His voice more clearly than ever
3. A Filled Life Becomes a Holy Life
The Spirit does not share space with sin. He does not coexist with bitterness, rebellion, or compromise.
Where He dwells, He sanctifies.
If you want to walk in victory, you do not need more willpower,
you need more filling.
Not more striving, more surrender.
Let’s pray:
Father we ask that you position us to be filled with your presence every day, every minute. Empty us of the old man and fill us with your glory, your presence! In Jesus name, amen.
