“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” — Mark 11:25
Unforgiveness is like carrying old chains you were never meant to wear. You may have been wounded, wronged, or betrayed—but when bitterness is held onto, it quietly becomes a prison. Unresolved offense blocks the flow of grace between heaven and the heart.
Unforgiveness gives the enemy a place to whisper lies, stir resentment, and keep old pain alive. What happened in the past may not be your fault, but holding onto it becomes your burden. The wound may have been caused by someone else, but the chains stay on when we refuse to forgive and let them go.
Forgiveness does not excuse the wrong.
Forgiveness does not deny the pain.
Forgiveness is not saying what happened was okay.
Forgiveness is saying: “I refuse to stay bound to this.”
Let’s look at the Greek and Hebrew found in the Strong’s. “Forgive” — ἀφίημι (aphiēmi)
Strong’s G863 This is the main word and it is powerful. It means:
• to send away
• to release
• to let go
• to dismiss
• to cancel a debt
So forgiveness here is not just emotional — it is a legal and spiritual release. I have actually been in the process of a deliverance and all of sudden the process stops. The demon has found a legal right to remain. At that point we searched for unforgiveness in their life. Once unforgiveness was found we walked them thru a prayer of forgiveness. After that the demonic spirit had no right and had to leave.
Jesus said, “when ye stand praying, forgive.” That means forgiveness is not just emotional—it is spiritual obedience. It is an act of faith. When you forgive, you step out of the courtroom of bitterness and into the courtroom of mercy.
Letting go protects your freedom. It clears the air between you and God. It removes the enemy’s leverage. It breaks old chains that have rattled for years. When you forgive, you don’t lose—you are released.
Forgiveness is a choice we make. We release the offending party into the hands of a just God.
We let the Lord handle them from that point on freeing us up to move forward in freedom.
Lord, I bring You every offense, every hurt, and every old wound I have carried. I choose to forgive, not by my strength, but by Your grace. Break every chain of bitterness and resentment in my heart. Guard my freedom and keep my spirit clean before You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
