ā€œSubmit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.ā€ James 4:7 (KJV)

Temptation is the enemy knocking at the door of your mind. It does not mean he has entered—but it does mean you must decide quickly whether to open or shut the door. We want to keep the doors that allow access to the devil closed.

In Greek, the word ā€œsubmitā€ is į½‘Ļ€ĪæĻ„Ī¬ĻƒĻƒĻ‰ (hypotassō) — a military term meaning to arrange oneself under authority. James is saying: place yourself under God’s command first. Victory does not start with resisting the devil; it starts with surrendering to God.

The word ā€œresistā€ is į¼€Ī½ĪøĪÆĻƒĻ„Ī·Ī¼Ī¹ (anthistēmi), meaning to stand against, oppose, or withstand firmly. This is not passive avoidance—it is active spiritual defiance. You don’t negotiate with temptation; you confront it with obedience.

The words ā€œhe will fleeā€ uses Ļ†ĪµĻĪ³Ļ‰ (pheugō) — means to run away in fear, not merely withdraw. When a believer resists while submitted to God, the enemy does not linger… he runs.

We need to learn to respond quickly when temptation pops up. If we don’t, resistance becomes weak. Immediate obedience strengthens our ability to resist.

Temptation is the enemy knocking. Submission to God is locking the door so there is no access. Resistance is sending the enemy running.

My grandfather who was a minister used to say ā€œyou can’t keep a buzzard from flying over your head but you can definitely keep him from building a nestā€.

In the wilderness Jesus did not debate Satan—He answered immediately with the Word. Matthew 4:1-11

What you reject quickly loses power over you.

What you entertain quietly gains influence.

Let’s pray. Lord, I choose to place myself under Your authority. I ask that You teach me to recognize temptation quickly and reject it firmly. Help me stand against the enemy with Your Word and Your truth keeping all doors shut to the enemy. I declare that when I resist, the devil must flee. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
