ā€œIf ye love me, keep my commandments.ā€ — John 14:15 (KJV)

Many people view obedience as restriction, but in the Kingdom of God obedience is actually freedom. The world says freedom is doing whatever you want, but the Word of God teaches that true freedom is walking in the will of God.

In John 14:15, Jesus said, ā€œIf ye love me, keep my commandments.ā€ The word ā€œkeepā€ comes from the Greek word τηρέω (tēreō) which means to guard, preserve, watch over, or hold fast. Obedience is not merely following rules; it is guarding the instructions of Christ as something precious. The more we value our relationship with the Lord the easier it is to be obedient. I find the more I know Him the more I want to walk in a manner that will cause Him to come near.

Obedience flows out of love. When our hearts truly love the Lord, obedience becomes a joy rather than a burden. Love says, ā€œLord, I trust Your way more than my own.ā€

God’s commands are not meant to confine us—they are meant to protect us.

Obedience is protection.

Every command of God is like a fence around a pasture. The fence does not limit the sheep; it protects them from the wolves. When we walk in obedience, we remain under God’s covering and guidance. Disobedience causes God’s hand to withdraw from us which leaves us open to attack.

Obedience keeps our hearts in a place of peace and safety.

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew idea of obedience is often connected with the word שÖøׁמַע (shāmaŹæ), meaning to hear with the intent to obey. In God’s view, hearing and obeying are inseparable. True hearing produces action.

Every time we obey God, something powerful happens in the spiritual realm.

• Every ā€œyesā€ to God strengthens our walk in the Spirit.

• Every ā€œyesā€ to God closes a door to temptation.

• Every ā€œyesā€ to God is a ā€œnoā€ to the enemy.

The enemy thrives in disobedience and compromise, but he loses ground when a believer simply chooses to obey the voice of the Lord.

This is why Jesus said in John 8:31–32:

ā€œIf ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.ā€

Truth brings freedom, and obedience keeps us walking in that truth.

The paradox of the Christian life is this:

When we surrender our will to God, we discover the greatest freedom we have ever known.

Freedom from guilt.

Freedom from bondage.

Freedom from the traps of the enemy.

Obedience is not chains—it is the pathway to liberty.

Choose obedience in the small things and the big things. When the Holy Spirit prompts your heart, respond with a willing ā€œYes, Lord.ā€ Because every step of obedience is a step into greater freedom and greater protection in God.

Lord, help us to be obedient to your will. Let us mature in you by learning to be obedient to your voice. Forgive us for our disobedience. In Jesus name, amen!
