“But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.”

— 1 Samuel 16:14 (KJV)

When the rûaḥ YHWH — the Spirit of the LORD — rested on Saul, he was filled with courage, authority, and divine wisdom. But when Saul continually disobeyed God, the Spirit departed, and in its place came a rûaḥ rā‘āh — a distressing, harmful spirit that brought torment and fear.

When the Spirit of the LORD Departs

The Hebrew word rûaḥ means “breath, wind, or spirit.” It is the animating presence that empowers and sustains. When the rûaḥ YHWH left Saul, he became spiritually hollow — a vessel without light. Disobedience and pride made room for a rûaḥ rā‘āh, a spirit of heaviness that darkened his mind and emotions. He could not find rest from the tormenting spirit.Without the Spirit of God, the heart becomes a dwelling place for unrest.

The Power of Worship

When David, a young shepherd anointed by God, played his harp, the atmosphere changed. The presence of God through David’s worship drove the evil spirit away (1 Samuel 16:23). The rûaḥ rā‘āh could not remain where the rûaḥ YHWH was welcomed. Worship becomes a weapon when it’s filled with God’s presence.

The Spirit That Brings Peace

The rûaḥ YHWH — the Spirit of the LORD — brings peace, joy, clarity, and strength. He is not merely an influence but the living presence of God within His people.“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17 When we yield to God in obedience and humility, His Spirit fills us. But when we resist Him, our hearts can grow cold, allowing anxiety, fear, or torment to enter. These bring sickness as well. The good news is this: through Jesus, we can be refilled, renewed, and restored by the Holy Spirit.

If you have failed, maybe you had a call on your life but you disobeyed the call of the Lord, or maybe you sinned and stepped outside of the Lord’s covering, you can find peace and restoration thru repentance. Like David, you can overcome and you can be free from torment. Reach for the Lord, ask for a clean heart and a right spirit to come within you. Ask forgiveness, then ask Him to bring you back to a place of unity with Him.

Let’s pray,

Lord, let not Your Spirit depart from me. Fill me afresh with Your presence. Drive out every troubling influence, and let Your peace rule my heart. May my worship invite Your glory and chase away all darkness. Forgive me Jesus.

Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
