“A Sign in a Manger”

The Savior of the world did not arrive in a palace, surrounded by wealth and honor, but in humility—wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. A feeding trough became the first resting place of the Bread of Life. Heaven touched earth in the most unexpected way. One if the most special times I have had in Israel was on our last trip in. Because of the war there were no tourist. When we arrived at the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem we were allowed to spend as much time as we wanted at the place marked for the birth of Jesus. I remember setting there running my fingers over the silver star that marks the place. I could imagine Mary and Joseph being there with baby Jesus. I was able to pray for awhile and soaked in the feeling of the place. I will include some of my photos from that time at the bottom of this article.

Centuries before that quiet night in Bethlehem, God had already spoken of His coming. “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14, KJV). The sign was not merely the miracle of the virgin birth, but the meaning of His name—Immanuel, God with us. God did not remain distant. He came near. So near you can feel him even now. That precious presence made possible by the shedding of his own blood to cover our sins. He is so near.

In the manger we see God’s heart on display. He chose lowliness so none would feel too far, too insignificant, or too unworthy to approach Him. Jesus entered the world in simplicity to invite all people into His grace. The manger reminds us that God meets us right where we are, offering hope, peace, and salvation through His Son.

May we receive Him—not just as a baby in a manger, but as Immanuel, God with us.
