“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
—Luke 15:20 (KJV)
When we read the parable of the prodigal son, much of our focus naturally falls on the son—his rebellion, his waste, his repentance, and his return. Yet there is another side of this story that is often overlooked: the immeasurable good it does for the father when the prodigal comes home. What joy fills the house when a wayward child returns. I have watched this happen and it is priceless to see the joy on the countenance of the parents whose child has returned.
The father had carried the weight of his son’s absence. Every day he must have looked down the road, longing for a familiar silhouette to appear on the horizon. He prayed and his heart ached.
When the prodigal finally returned, it was not only the son who was restored, but the father’s heart also found healing. The father’s joy was immediate and overflowing. He didn’t wait for explanations; he didn’t demand repayment. He ran to meet his son, embraced him, and rejoiced. That moment restored what was broken inside the father as well.
This reveals something precious about the heart of God. We often think of repentance as primarily for our benefit—to free us from guilt and shame. But Scripture shows us that when we return, it also brings joy and delight to our heavenly Father. Jesus said, “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth” (Luke 15:10). When you turn back to Him, you bring gladness to the Father’s heart.
I know many of you have a prodigal. We declare in the spirit realm that they are coming home! In Jesus name all chains must come off and freedom from the darkness that has held them be broken! Bring them home to the Father’s house Lord! In Jesus name! Amen!
In agreement with you for your prodigal,
